Year 7 Mental Health and Wellbeing Day

On Monday the 4th July, Year 7 spent the day off timetable focussing on their mental health and wellbeing.  The entire day was dedicated to raising awareness about mental health but most importantly about providing the students with a variety of opportunities to explore strategies they can use to help maintain mental health.  Some of the activities included yoga, fitness, mindfulness, art and music, relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises and meditation.  The students also got the opportunity to talk with our retiring and current sixth form leadership teams about transitions through school life, how to manage mental health, and where to go for support.  They were also invited to help plan for the future of Wellington.  A fab day had by all.  Here are some of the tutor groups quotes below:

“It was great to have a day where we can focus on us and how we feel, away from school work.”

“A relaxing day designed to help understand mental health and well-being, including trying a variety of different activities to help us de-stress and practice mindfulness.”

“Today’s mental health day has been very informative and a really enjoyable experience. Relaxation has been the best explanation for a lot of the day and we have learnt many ways to stay stress-free and calm. Music was fun because we got to listen to music and dance and PE energized us!”

“People may try to support you in being mindful, but often we are the best ones to help ourselves. Sometimes we need to admit that we need to ask others for help and support and this is okay.”

“The day was fun, relaxed and calming yet exciting and tiring too.”

“Mental health matters just as much as physical health and there are different ways to help with both don’t sit in silence talk to someone.”

“If you are feeling down don’t be silent, ashamed or worried share your feelings with others.  There is always someone in the same shadow as you.”

“Mental health is important.  We had a fun day experiencing different ways we can help ourselves.”
