Year 10 Football
We played our second ‘international’ fixture this week, taking on our second touring Australian team. This one was going to be more difficult against a side who award scholarships to their students for football. On top of that, their ages ranged from 15-17 and they had a technical director as well as a first team coach. We decided the Year 10 team deserved to be tested and that in this busy season of coursework and exam reviews for Yr11 and sixth form, it would also be easier. I think it’s fair to say we were slightly intimidated and in awe of the situation during the first 10 minutes as they dominated. We didn’t wilt or hide away – we stuck to our guns and tweaked things tactically which saw us come into the game more. Henry Howarth in goal was amazing, keeping them at bay when they did get through. 0-0 at half time and we were feeling positive about our play. In the second half, we were OUTSTANDING and to say how proud I am of the team does not get anywhere nearer how I felt yesterday! To go 1-0 down early in the second half and then fight to claw our way back in was a joy to watch. Brady down the left who cuts it back for Buckley whose shot was saved but claimed the rebound and squared it to Carr for our equaliser. Yes, they put us under pressure but we were always a threat on the counter attack. We defended and played for each other more so today than I have seen before. A great and inspiring team performance against a strong opposition that resulted in a deserved draw. I couldn’t be more proud.
