The very first Wellington School Book Championship took place on Thursday the 17th of September, with our Book Champions doing an amazing job of filling all of Year 7 and Year 8 with enthusiasm for their chosen books.

Over five hundred students in Years 7 and 8 filed into the Adshead Hall and were taught, entertained and persuaded by our nineteen teams of students from Years 8 to 11. It was an inspiring sight, seeing our own students take on the responsibility of teaching, sometimes cajoling, and then inspiring their peers with a love of the books that they themselves love.

The ingenuity of our Book Champions – who designed such imaginative, engaging and fun activities – was truly impressive. The Adshead Hall was filled with their passion and love for reading: that alone was infectious. Championing a range of books, from old favourites such as ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’; to more modern publications such as ‘The Midnight Journey’ ‘Dragon Realm’, ‘One of Us is Lying’, and ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’; and even deeply philosophical books such as ‘Don’t Believe Everything you Think’; our Book Champions were outstanding; if by the end of the day, many of them had learned how hard it was teaching for four hours, and left the Adshead Hall with a greater appreciation of the hard work their teachers put in to teaching them day in day out.

So, a big thank you to our 2026 Book Champions from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11: their peers were so impressed by what you’ve done, as were your teachers.
