Politics Trip

6th Form Politics students brought their half term to a close in exciting style with a Q&A with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle at The Bolton School.

Sir Lindsay opened the session with a fascinating insight into his political life, taking students on a journey from his humble beginnings as a young local Councillor in Chorley, right up to the present day and meetings with President Biden.

It was interesting to see him stress the importance of ensuring Respect, Diversity and the defence of British values in the House, as well as dealing with concerns around security.

Wellington students conducted themselves admirably, asking pertinent questions on his favourite PM and whether he is in favour of reforming the voting system. Perhaps the most insightful response was his analysis that PMQs is ‘pure theatre’ rather than effective scrutiny of the government, something I’m sure will be finding its way into many an essay over the coming year!
