Into Film Competition: Sense and Sensibility
We had a round 20 entrants for the Into Film: Decisions and Dilemmas competition this half-term, inspired by the new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. Students were asked to write a letter to sensible protagonist, Elinor Dashwood, about how life has changed since her experiences of rigid, class-bound Regency England, with its strict codes of etiquette and limitations based on gender.
The standard was amazing, and we were very grateful that some of our Sixth Form students helped us complete the very difficult task of selecting some school winners!
Dilara, our KS4 winner, shared that “I assumed everyone would write about what’s changed, but other than the rights that we see on the surface, the way we treat women hasn’t changed much.”
Our joint KS3 winners were Dhatri and Maisie and in KS5 it was Eva who triumphed! Also, we were delighted to discover that Leyla was the runner-up in the national competition run by Into Film!
Leyla will receive a copy of the novel and poster soon. She told us “I was interested by the idea of how dependent on men women used to be, it must have been so frustrating not to have the free will to do what you want to do. I wanted to write about the changes in technology, but mostly I wanted to tell Elinor of the changes to women’s freedom.”
Our school winners are gifted copies of the book. All entrants receive a certificate and a chocolate treat! We hope they keep writing and perhaps seek out an Austen novel, or two, to inspire them.
Our entrants and winners are pictured, as is the entry Leyla wrote!
