European Literature Society

The English Department’s European Literature Society met up on Tuesday after school to discuss their first work of literature of the year: ‘Metamorphosis’ by Franz Kafka, which tells the story of salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a “monstrous vermin”. The novella has been widely discussed among literary critics: our students from Years 11, 12 & 13 considered a number of interpretations of the story, with a great discussion of the story’s allegorical and symbolic aspects. If no clear consensus was reached on what the story means, all agreed that it is a fascinating and thought provoking read.

Next on the reading list is a famous story by Flaubert: ‘A Simple Heart’
