Creative Writing Success

Huge congratulations to Year 10’s Martha Adams, whose short horror story, ‘Not Alone’ was a winning entry in a creative writing competition to find the best short stories in the Manchester area.

Martha entered the competition (run by Sale bookshop, Get Free Books), which asked adults and young people to write a narrative related to a bookshop in some way. Martha’s dark tale with a twist could be no longer than 700 words, and she crafted concise and powerful writing to attain third place! Here is an excerpt from her evocative story:

“…the isolated path stretches out before me, overgrown and unfriendly. The slender skeletons of trees cast their malicious shadows over the ground, their claws making desperate attempts to clutch at my shoes. Wind whips my cheeks and rain drenches my clothes, and the sky is nothing but a carpet of thick grey clouds.”

The competition was judged by author David Gaffney and she received her well-deserved prizes at an awards evening at Coppice Library in Sale. Martha’s story has also been published in an anthology to showcase the winning stories in the competition.

Congratulations, Martha! We are enormously proud of you!
