Wellington Debating Society
This week’s motion concerned whether governments should financially incentivize inter-ethnic marriages. What is on the face of it a rather peculiar thing to do, for governments to get involved in who marries who, it could be presented as a solution to racism, something that has been dogging society forever, leading not just to hatred and disagreement, but mass murder, slavery and even genocide. However, the government need to make it clear that the status quo – how things are now – is so bad that something so unprecedented needs to be considered. However, the opposition, led by Dialra Gencer won out, arguing that all that would happen under the motion, is that the more economically disadvantaged – the working class – would be incentivized, and the upper classes wouldn’t – which would lead to the gap between the haves and have-nots, the rich and the poor, being increased. We would end up with a racial underclass and a racial upper-class – a situation that would be immeasurably worse than what we have today. With this dystopian outcome, the Opposition won the day. A great debate.
