Debating Competition at Urmston Grammar School
On Thursday this week the top four debating teams from Wellington competed against teams from Urmston Grammar School. There were four debates, covering topics such as whether we should support ‘Eco-Terrorism’, and a potential band for social media for Under 16s. The standard was very high, with the stand out debater being Wellington’s Dilara Gencer from Year 10, who got two firsts. Teams of Sourish Chanda and Jaden Chiu, Ruby Wang and Leyla Shi, Kylie Leung and Chloe Yuen, and Jack Goodman and Louis Vasseur also were successful, showing a quick mastery of the topics – with only 15 minutes to prepare their five-minute speeches. Our team’s practice – debating every Thursday after school this year – really paid off, as well as the experience of competing in a number of the most prestigious national debating competitions. Well done to our teams! This was a great achievement to top off another successful year of debating.
