Wellington Debating Society

Abolishing the institution of marriage is a great topic for a debate as it really makes you think: what harms and what benefits are delivered by an institution most of us take for granted? What would a world without the institution of marriage look like? Who are the people who benefit most from it, and who are the people who are harmed most by it? This debate was decided by whether the proposition or the opposition made the strongest case for who are the main ‘stake holders’ in this debate i.e. who are those most affected by the institution of marriage? Who should we think of first when considering whether to abolish the institution of marriage? The Opening Proposition team of Dilara Gencer & Louis Vasseur made the strongest case: showing how women, who are the main stakeholders, are mostly harmed by the institution of marriage. The Closing Proposition team – first time debaters – Charisse Chew & Abby Tsang also put in a commendable performance.
