Wellington Debating Society
Rather than focusing on what internet piracy is, or on how it might affect production of media – both film and gaming – this debate started to stray onto more interesting territory: what is media for. Is media primarily educational or entertainment? And should we all have the right to be creators and to express ourselves, or should it be the reserve of the chosen few in Hollywood. What harms do these paywalls really constitute? Teams of Ruby Wang and Leyla Shi, as well as Chris Bhattacharya and Sam Coyle both put forward philosophically intriguing arguments; however, it was the depth and force of the arguments of the team of Dilara Gencer and Saleha Hashemi that won the day. Next week we’ll be debating whether we should be banning all forms of animal research.
