Year 12 Geography Field Trip – Blencathra Centre, Lake District (4th–6th June 2025)

From the 4th to the 6th of June 2025, our Year 12 Geography students took part in an exciting and rewarding field trip to the Blencathra Field Studies Centre in the Lake District. Accompanied by Miss Baker, Mr Whitaker and myself, the students demonstrated outstanding focus and resilience throughout the trip, despite the very wet weather.

On Day 1, the group visited Keswick to practise a range of human geography data collection techniques. This hands-on experience gave students valuable insight into fieldwork methodology and the complexities of collecting data in real-life environments.

Day 2 involved a coastal study at Silloth beach, where students investigated beach gradients, took pebble samples, and assessed the effectiveness of groynes. Later that day, they travelled to West Beach, south of Silloth, to learn how to measure and analyse sand dune systems. The students remained engaged and enthusiastic throughout, undeterred by the challenging weather conditions.

On Day 3, the focus shifted to data analysis, with a classroom session at the centre exploring GIS (Geographic Information Systems), inferential statistics, and methods of data presentation. These sessions helped consolidate the fieldwork experience and prepared students for future coursework and exams.

We are incredibly proud of how the students conducted themselves—polite, motivated, and consistently focussed. Their positive attitude and willingness to engage with every aspect of the trip made the experience a great success.
Well done, Year 12 Geographers!
