This week’s motion – ‘This House would only allow those who pass a political awareness exam to vote’ – exposed our government speakers yet again. Motions – proposals for things to happen / changes to be made / laws to be passed generally haven’t happened, been passed, been made for good reason. If you think about it, a compulsory political awareness exam would be so prone to bias and manipulation, it would lead to the disenfranchising of poor voters, minority voters, or any voter who just couldn’t be bothered to do the class. And who is to decide who passes and who fails? We would end up with a non-democracy. Such potential harms must be anticipated by the Government speakers. Also, the status quo, how things are at the moment, must be characterized as so bad that such a desperate step needs to be taken. Are things so bad with our democracy? Maybe not quite that bad.
