Wellington Debating Society
Debating the legalization of cannibalism turned out to be a great idea. A classic debate – debating something that in the real world would not (or should not) ever happen – presents an interesting challenge to all teams – both proposition and opposition. The Opening Proposition and Opposition Teams didn’t perhaps do enough to explain why we were having this debate: why, of all the issues we could be debating, is this important? How will this change the world, transform the status quo, and deliver a greater or lesser amount of human happiness. However, the team of Dilara Gencer and Leyla Shi in Closing Proposition brought the debate alive by bringing things back to basics: what would this cannibalism business look like, how would it impact the real world, and exactly who would benefit? In short, how would the proposition motion make the status quo better. Whilst the Closing Opposition team of Sourish Chanda Jayden Chu threw a great deal of rhetorical mud at them, they did more than enough to win the debate. After half term we host Urmston Grammar School at Wellington, in our first external competition of the year: 3.00pm in Vale Hall. This will be followed by a trip to debate at Lancaster University on the 22nd of November.
