Urmston Grammar School Debating Competition

The first annual Urmston Grammar School Debating Competition was a fiercely contested match between Urmston Grammar and Wellington School. There were four debates, with topics ranging from the development of A.I, to banning mobile phones for young people, getting rid of the two-child benefit cap, and banning private schools. Our Year 9 teams of Sourish Chanda & Jaden Chiu, along with Dilara Gencer & Saleha Hashemi divided the spoils between them, both winning one of their debates, and taking a second in the other. Our A Team of Maiko Fairbrother & Georgia Holmes had to compete against Urmston’s Year 12 team, but nonetheless put in an excellent performance, putting forward a compelling case for Artificial Intelligence, and then destroying the concept of the two-child benefit in the second debate, exposing just how unethical it can seem. This competition was the first for our Year 8 team of Eva McDonald and Alia Shea, both of whom spoke so well, and so convincingly, in the two-child benefit cap debate. A great competition, which augurs well for the future of debating at Wellington.
