Cambridge University Debating Competition
The Cambridge University Competition on Saturday the 7th of March was a real challenge for Wellington School’s Debating Teams, debating the best debating teams across the North of the country, and many in the South too. The motions were varied and often very tricky and technical, such as whether sports clubs should be owned by their fans, or whether states should prioritize economic growth. Novel motions such as debating the relative merits of rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake, or whether we should nationalize the sin industry, proved to be more enjoyable and allowed our debaters to really think creatively. It was a long day of debating for our teams, with the team of Chris Bhattacharya & Jack Goodman getting our highest place – scoring three seconds overall, Jaden Chiu & Sourish Chanda scoring a second and a first, the team of Dilara Gencer & Louis Vasseur scoring a first and a third, and the team of Ruby Wang & Kylie Leung scoring two thirds. We’re getting better with each competition and now regularly beating older students in more experienced debating teams. Well done to all.
