Year 8 Science Trip – 10.01.17

On Tuesday the Science department took 55 Year 8s all the way to the National Space Centre in Leicester. After an early start and long coach journey, we arrived to see the rocket tower dominating the skyline. The first stop was the planetarium which was a first time treat for some of our students. There we saw a fantastic show about the effects of going into space on the body of an astronaut and there were certainly some mind blowing visual effects. Afterwards, the students explored the exhibits, whilst trying to find answers to the quiz questions, had a go on the space simulator and went through rigorous “testing” to see if they met the requirements for space travel. After a quick lunch stop, we climbed up the 144 steps to the top of the rocket tower where students found themselves at the radio controls of a Russian space capsule, inside a space pod and stepping into an astronaut suit. Then a quick stop in the gift shop before the long journey back. Well done to Tom Pavey (winner of the quiz) and runners up Armeen Shehzad, Mia Liddell and Awena Owen who won either a chrome space shuttle or astronaut pin badge!
