Year 7 Girls win thriller against Blue Coat
Mr Riley with this match report:
“Monday saw the U12 girls football team win in the first round of the English Schools Cup against a strong outfit from Blue Coat School (Oldham).
The Blue Coat team started strongly and it took some resolute defending, a bit of good fortune and a couple of great saves from Lucia Irving to keep the score at 0-0 going into half time.
An early second half goal for Blue Coat galvanised the Wellington team, with a through ball being seized on by Holly Abbott who neatly finished to draw the scores level.
Blue Coat responded well though and scored again to lead 2-1 with only 5 minutes to play. The Wellington players carried on fighting and their endeavour was rewarded with the last kick of normal time as Martha Smart skilfully scored from Phoebe Dunn Barrett’s corner.
Into extra time and enter Nancy Pickles – tirelessly running for the whole match, she got her just reward with an amazing solo goal!
Some imperious defending from stand in captain Abbie Greaves (and a bit of help from the woodwork) meant Wellington hung on to win 3-2.
All the girls showed great skill and endeavour to overcome really strong opposition; with every player contributing in some way towards the win.”
