Year 7 Football – 26.04.17

Mr Gerschler with this match report:

“The Year 7 football team played their semi-final against Altrincham Boys Grammar School on Wednesday evening. The team have been in fantastic form of late and went in to the game with a longer unbeaten record than Manchester United…not having lost since 12th October 2016!

The pattern of the game was established early on (with many similarities to last night’s Derby!), with Alti having the majority of possession but Wellington easily coping with most of their pressure. Our three-man defensive unit of Josh Wilson, Joe Hughes and Charlie Walsh (and Tom Pattison when he slotted into defence in the second half) were phenomenal; cutting out most of Alti’s crosses and throwing themselves in front of a number of shots in the first 30 minutes. Dillon Key in goal easily swatted away anything that sneaked past our defence. That was until the last two minutes of the first half, when we failed to clear a corner and Alti took the lead. The game changed dramatically in the second half, as we upped our intensity and pressed Alti hard all across the pitch. Tom Jones and Martin Griffin raced up and down the wings hitting Alti on the counter time and time again and it was no surprise that our equaliser came through a well worked quick break, easily finished by Martin. We had a late chance to win the game through a Joe Hughes free kick but Alti’s goalkeeper made an excellent save in the final minutes of the second half, so the game went to extra time. The pattern of play continued in the extra period and resembled a Basketball game at times, due to the end to end action. Sadly, it was just not Wellington’s day and Alti snatched a cruel winner in the final minute of extra time.

It was a phenomenal performance of true Wellington character; bravery, resilience, endeavour and ambition. I have honestly never been so proud of a performance. This team will come back bigger, stronger and hungrier to go even further next season.”
