Year 11 Football
“Although the pressure of exams is looming a core group of lads are still committed to representing our school in football across Trafford and Greater Manchester” writes Mr Gubbins. “We have now reached the Semi-Final’s for both the Trafford Cup Competition and Greater Manchester Plate. We are due to play Manchester Grammar school on Wednesday 24th April at home – 5pm kick off. Our opponents for the Trafford cup is yet to be decided.
In the quarter final we turned up with a bare 11 against AGSB who had a squad of 16. We played at least 20 minutes of the first half with 10 men due to an injury to Charlie Ashton that he was later able to play through. We were carrying knocks all over the pitch. We had around 20% overall possession. Yet we had heart and character. We defended as a solid unit and set up to counter attack. The lads worked themselves into the ground and got a reward for their efforts around 15 minutes before the final whistle. I knew we only needed one clear cut opportunity to score and I was not wrong. Archie Vickers ran onto a through ball to slot it past the charging keeper. We were tired and battered but maintained our motivation and discipline to the final whistle. Wellington 1 – ABGS 0.”
