Inter Schools’ Sports Challenge 15.03.17

This from Mrs Thomson:

“On Wednesday Mr Manifould and I took 8 athletes handpicked from the South Africa Sports Tour Squad to compete in an inter school’s sports challenge competition at Salford City College (Eccles site).  Up for grabs for the winners was a £100 each for the pupils and £100 for the winning school.  Wellington took a girls’ team – Evie Chard, Savannah Holden, Jessica Grundy and Eleanor Swain, and a boys’ team – Toby Redman, Jaydon Brady, James Buckley and Marcus Jones.  After a lunch, tour of the facilities and a stint in the classroom doing activities and learning what it was like to study Sports Science for Further Education it was time for the practical element of the event – the sports challenge against a dozen other Greater Manchester schools.  The teams hit the Fitness Suite where they took to the treadmills, rowing machines and bikes to run, row and cycle the 19km equivalent of the Manchester Inner Ring Road.  Both our teams were amazing giving their absolute all – spurred on by myself and Mr Manifould and the prospect of rich rewards for the South Africa Tour kitty.  Evie Chard and Marcus Jones were particularly impressive on the rowing machines with some fantastic times – Marcus and Toby alone rowed 3,500 metres more than double the distance achieved by any other schools! But it was the girls who were triumphant – a spectacular effort and in spite of a very wobbly bike with a dodgy lap counter!  Clearly Mr Beeley’s Monday night Fitness sessions have, quite literally, ‘paid off’ –free ice creams all round on Table Bay Beach!”
