Demons and Angels – 06.02.18
“Demons and angels were the theme of the day in the LRC on Tuesday as we were lucky enough to have the Author and the Illustrator of the YA book the Glass Dagger as guests for the day”, writes Ms Gilbert.
“Stephanie Hudson and Caroline Fairbairn entertained pupils with a demonstration of how you can demonise a person; take a photo and turn it into a demonic, or an angelic, character – although some celebrities didn’t need much adjustment!
Pupils found the process of how they develop a character fascinating; from the initial description of the character in the author’s imagination to the final published drawing in the book – it made the book and the characters really come alive.
“The most fun I have ever had in school,” Shaun Year 7
“It was really cool – hope they can come again,” Chloe Year 7
Then it was the turn of the GCSE Art students and A level students to create some of these characters. Our visitors were very impressed with their work, especially Emily’s in year 10 who brought along her portfolio; she may have landed herself some future employment!
From the sounds of it there are many budding writers and illustrators amongst pupils at Wellington and these visits are a marvellous way of encouraging this creative impulse – the message being just go for it!
We are extremely grateful to Caroline and Stephanie for taking the time to visit us and hope they will visit again soon.”
